App analytics research companies have been falling over one another to provide estimates for TikTok’s growth in 2019. The latest is Sensor Tower, which has published its summary of a big year for Bytedance’s social app.

“ByteDance’s social video app TikTok reached more than 738 million downloads and grossed nearly $177 million globally – more than five times its 2018 revenue – in 2019,” is its headline claim. “TikTok has clocked more than 1.65 billion downloads to date, with new users added in 2019 representing 13 percent year-over-year growth from the 655 million installs the app registered in 2018…

Despite having been banned in India in late April, that market still managed to lead the way for TikTok downloads in 2019 with 323 million installs, accounting for 44 percent of the overall figure, up from the 27 percent share it held in 2018 with 180 million installs.”

Sensor Tower claims that China was TikTok’s second biggest country for downloads in 2019, with 7% of its total, although it warns that its figures don’t cover non-Google app stores in China, so will be underestimating the total there. “China is still TikTok’s biggest spender, with the $122.9 million spent by iOS users there accounting for 69 percent of the market share in 2019 and more than tripling what U.S. users (20 percent of the market share) spent within the app ($36 million).”
