Ian Hogarth was the co-founder and CEO of concert-discovery app Songkick, before stepping down in early 2016. Nowadays, he’s a prominent figure in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) startups, including as an angel investor. His ‘AI Nationalism’ article from last year is well worth a read, on that front. But so is the latest version of the ‘The State of AI’ report that he writes with fellow investor Nathan Benaich. “130 slides covering the most important machine learning research, industry and political developments over the past 12 months,” as Hogarth described it on Twitter. “New section on China.” You can see the full report here, as it’s free to read, download and share.

Music-focused AI isn’t the focus at all: instead there is plenty of information on how ‘reinforcement learning’ is taking on humans at gaming; machine-learning’s utilisation for life science; innovations in natural language processing; deep learning and medicine; and much more besides. If it’s important for how we think about music-focused AI that we have an appreciation for the wider context of different strands of AI (and it surely is!) then the report makes an excellent starting point.
